Summary

From the Amazon Charts and New York Times bestselling author of The Shadow Box and Last Day comes a breathtaking thriller about a family shaken by lies, vengeance, and a cold-blooded crime。 A fierce blizzard is burying the eastern seaboard, but on the icy Rhode Island shore renowned artist Maddie Morrison finds warm sanctuary from a contentious divorce at the legendary Ocean House。 Hours later, her body is found buried under a blanket of snow and her little daughter, CeCe, has disappeared without a trace。 For Detective Conor Reid; his brother, Tom, a coast guard commander; and Maddie’s grieving sister, Hadley, the posh hotel becomes ground zero for an investigation。 Trapped by the blizzard, they must hunker down and determine who in the young mother’s life could have possibly wanted her dead。 There are stories of a twisted romantic past。 Of old jealousies and resentments that still cut to the bone。 And a history of greed, rage, and revenge that created the perfect storm for murder。 A storm that has just begun。

Have never read anything by LuAnne Rice but will definitely read another of her books! A dead woman, a missing child, a pot full of suspects & a half dozen different law agencies trying to solve the case。 A great book & well defined characters make it an easy read & one you don’t want to stop reading。

Amazon First Read- Definitely grabbed my attention as I finished it in a day… felt it got a little convoluted towards the end but enjoyed it and will check out some other books from this author。

This book was so good!! I stayed up way too late to finish it。

This was my first book written by Luanne Rice and it will not be my last。 I liked the complicated relationships with all of the characters and I was not expecting the ending。 This makes an exciting mystery read for me。

An entertaining mysteryThe protagonists were likable characters whom I felt myself pulling for from the start。 The descriptions of places made me feel like I was there, smelling the smells, feeling the wind on my face, and hearing the waves crashing on the shore。 It was a thrilling, easy read that held my interest。 I recommend this book for those looking for a fun, murder mystery。 I gave Last Night four stars because I enjoyed the book, and want to read more about the characters solving other cr An entertaining mysteryThe protagonists were likable characters whom I felt myself pulling for from the start。 The descriptions of places made me feel like I was there, smelling the smells, feeling the wind on my face, and hearing the waves crashing on the shore。 It was a thrilling, easy read that held my interest。 I recommend this book for those looking for a fun, murder mystery。 I gave Last Night four stars because I enjoyed the book, and want to read more about the characters solving other crimes。 。。。more

Page turnerI enjoyed the drama and watching how the twists and turns solved the story。 The characters were charming and real。 A quick read。

Sooo slow。 A lot of descriptions and some of it repetitive。 Only so many ways you can describe snow before it’s repetitive in my opinion。 The twist was somewhat predictable, and one of the characters involvement was not fluid in my opinion。

Fast paced and intriguing book。

This is the first Luanne Rice book that I have read in a while and it was a great story。 When I think of Luanne Rice, I don't think of murder mystery books so this was a great surprise to me。 The story kept you guessing all the way through and was wrapped up beautifully。 A quick read that keeps your interest from beginning to end。 This is the first Luanne Rice book that I have read in a while and it was a great story。 When I think of Luanne Rice, I don't think of murder mystery books so this was a great surprise to me。 The story kept you guessing all the way through and was wrapped up beautifully。 A quick read that keeps your interest from beginning to end。 。。。more

This book started out strong, but it had so many unnecessary details。 By the middle I just wanted it to end。 I did enjoy the setting and a different trope than usual。 I felt as though the author herself was sort of over it by 3/4 of the way in the book。 It was probably 100 pages longer than necessary。 I found myself skipping a few pages to just get to the point。

BOOK REPORTIt certainly does feel appropriate to give the first book I’ve read this year 3 stars on January 3rd, especially because it’s now the third book I’ve read by Luanne Rice。On whom, it seems, I can always count to deliver a solid story with believable characters (both main and otherwise) in great settings。 Things did get just a little bit convoluted-y, but I was actually more OK with that than usual because I had figured a lot of it out along the way。 So it wasn't ridiculous, I guess is BOOK REPORTIt certainly does feel appropriate to give the first book I’ve read this year 3 stars on January 3rd, especially because it’s now the third book I’ve read by Luanne Rice。On whom, it seems, I can always count to deliver a solid story with believable characters (both main and otherwise) in great settings。 Things did get just a little bit convoluted-y, but I was actually more OK with that than usual because I had figured a lot of it out along the way。 So it wasn't ridiculous, I guess is my point。 Very pleased that there are still so many books by Ms Rice “out there” for me yet to read。PSAfter finishing the acknowledgements at the end of Last Night I immediately googled to find out more about the Ocean House and the Ocean House Author Series。 Even though the lineup for 2024 has yet to be posted, I know that I will be trying my dead-level best to get up there for one of these events this year。 And, of course, to pretend that I live in a suite at a luxury New England seaside resort。Here’s a link if you’re interested in who all the authors were for the 2023 events: https://www。oceanhouseri。com/experien。。。 。。。more

Art can be deadlyI have enjoyed Luanne Rice books for a long time--I know what I am getting, an exciting , heartfelt read。Tense setup, blizzard conditions, a murder, and a lost child start this fast-paced thriller off with a bang and barely slow down, even for the conclusion。 I recommend this to all who enjoy women's fiction/thrillers with a satisfying ending。 Art can be deadlyI have enjoyed Luanne Rice books for a long time--I know what I am getting, an exciting , heartfelt read。Tense setup, blizzard conditions, a murder, and a lost child start this fast-paced thriller off with a bang and barely slow down, even for the conclusion。 I recommend this to all who enjoy women's fiction/thrillers with a satisfying ending。 。。。more

A murder mystery of tangled clues and suspects。 The tentacles of deception course through beautiful and luxurious surroundings described by Ms。 Rice as she weaves a tale of family, of relationships, and of art。I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。

I enjoyed this book but at times it was slow and I was slightly bored。 This was to a cozy mystery and an average read。 Not sure if I would recommend。

I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it。 I loved many books by this author in the past but I could not get into this book and I just couldn't finish。 It started off really intense but it just went downhill for me after that point。 I have no interest in art and there was just too much talk about it for my taste。 The overall descriptions of everything was just too much。 I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it。 I loved many books by this author in the past but I could not get into this book and I just couldn't finish。 It started off really intense but it just went downhill for me after that point。 I have no interest in art and there was just too much talk about it for my taste。 The overall descriptions of everything was just too much。 。。。more

I love Luanne’s books。 Being local to southeastern CT, I love that I know the places she writes about。 I though I had the story figured out, but was surprised in the end!

Maddie and CeCe check into the Ocean House。 It is a place to start over after Maddie's divorce。 Maddie ventures out in the blizzard to meet someone before her sister arrives。 But neither Maddie or CeCe comes back。 Maddie is found buried in the snow and CeCe is nowhere to be found。 Luanne Rice is a gifted writer。 While this story at times was hard to read (when dealing with poor CeCe) I enjoyed the mystery and suspense of it。 Just when I thought I knew who was behind Maddie's murder, Luanne would Maddie and CeCe check into the Ocean House。 It is a place to start over after Maddie's divorce。 Maddie ventures out in the blizzard to meet someone before her sister arrives。 But neither Maddie or CeCe comes back。 Maddie is found buried in the snow and CeCe is nowhere to be found。 Luanne Rice is a gifted writer。 While this story at times was hard to read (when dealing with poor CeCe) I enjoyed the mystery and suspense of it。 Just when I thought I knew who was behind Maddie's murder, Luanne would throw another twist in the story and I would be back to square one。 The setting was beautiful and left me wanting to visit the Ocean House。 I would recommend Last Night to all my book reading friends and will look for more work by Luanne Rice。 Special thanks to NetGalley, Luanne Rice, and Thomas & Mercer Publishing for the advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest opinion。 4 stars for me。 #LastNight #NetGalley 。。。more

I completely enjoy Luanne Rice’s mystery stories。 This one is no different。 While the first chapter and the way the characters came together seemed a little unrealistic, Last Night was a quick, entertaining read。 I would call it more of a mystery than a thriller。 But good solid beach read!

3。5 stars, rounded up。Disclaimer: I am Rhode Island born and raised, so I think a lot of my love for this comes from the setting。 Without recognizing the places and towns, I don't know that the book would have had such an impact on me。If you read The Shadow Box, you'll recognize a few of these characters。 The names didn't mean anything to me from the synopsis, but the quick reminders in the book were helpful! I liked that it was the same characters, but not a series。 Tom and Conor are genuinely 3。5 stars, rounded up。Disclaimer: I am Rhode Island born and raised, so I think a lot of my love for this comes from the setting。 Without recognizing the places and towns, I don't know that the book would have had such an impact on me。If you read The Shadow Box, you'll recognize a few of these characters。 The names didn't mean anything to me from the synopsis, but the quick reminders in the book were helpful! I liked that it was the same characters, but not a series。 Tom and Conor are genuinely good guys, so it's nice to have them around。I liked the overall mystery, but the ending wasn't really a shock to me。 I didn't fully have it figured out or anything, but it was more of a "yeah, that makes sense" shrug than a jaw dropping reaction。 I liked the character development in some of the villains, and the way it all came together。The only real issue I had was CeCe。 I'll be honest, I don't know any six year olds (or many children at all for that matter), but are they actually as smart as CeCe was? She was coming up with things in her head that I don't know that I would have even thought of and I'm old。 It seemed a little unrealistic and the chapters that were more from her POV had me rolling my eyes a bit。Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas and Mercer for providing an ARC of this book! 。。。more

I selected this book based on the publisher’s gripping description and enticing book cover。 Before this read, I had not heard of Luanne Rice。 If I had, I would have known that I am not her market, but she has many loyal fans。 I now realize her books made it to the Hallmark channel, which explains a lot。 They are cozy。 The narrative style is no-frills telling。 The characters are so darn sweet and polite that they even behave themselves under extreme duress。 None of this mirrors real-life behavior I selected this book based on the publisher’s gripping description and enticing book cover。 Before this read, I had not heard of Luanne Rice。 If I had, I would have known that I am not her market, but she has many loyal fans。 I now realize her books made it to the Hallmark channel, which explains a lot。 They are cozy。 The narrative style is no-frills telling。 The characters are so darn sweet and polite that they even behave themselves under extreme duress。 None of this mirrors real-life behavior or dialogue, but many readers do not want that。 She also educates the reader by inserting information such as having Coast Guard Commander Tom explain to his State Police Investigator brother Conor that a key chain made of foam is floatable。 Or describing the make, length, engines, and safety features of Tom’s boat。 More concerning for me is the narrative thrust。 Central to this story is a child who is undergoing a horrifying and traumatic experience。 For me, that is not entertainment。 This book is available for pre-order。 It will be released on February 1, 2024。Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for providing this eARC。 。。。more
